Director General at Dubai Knowledge
Dr Abdulla Al Karam, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Directors at KHDA, is an engineer by trade, an educator by profession, and a philosopher at heart. Working together with private education providers, parents, teachers and students, he is helping to shape Dubai’s education and human development sector.
His vision is that every private school and university student in Dubai has access to world-class education. Since KHDA was established, 27 new private schools have opened in Dubai, providing capacity for more than 40,000 students. Demonstrating its strength, the sector continued to grow throughout the economic downturn, registering 7.4% growth in enrolment in the last academic year. “Private education,” says Dr Al Karam, “is resilient to the booms and busts of normal business cycles and offers solid returns for investors who can provide students with good quality education.”
The increase in the quantity of schools has been accompanied by improvement in the quality of education they offer. “The number of students attending good or outstanding schools has more than tripled in the last academic year,” says Dr Al Karam. “We are working with the community to make sure this trend continues.”
He sees his role as one which can bring the education community together for the benefit of the students of Dubai. “In our schools and universities, we have some of the best, most committed educators in the world. Our goal is to leverage this local expertise to build long-lasting, collaborative relationships with one another.
“We share a common belief that continued improvement of private education in Dubai will happen when we all embrace a positive approach.”
